This is such a subjective question so I am going to narrow it down and say what I know on the subject and what I have read, which is NOT a lot. I am looking for a scope I can grow into for a Springfield National Match M1A that I just purchased before Christmas 2012. I want to be able to shoot from 300 - 1000 yards. I would eventually like to compete some day, though that may be a pipe dream, but I would like the option. The rifle shoots the .308 cartridge. What I have read says that I should be looking for a scope in the first focal plane (sniper forum, m1a forum). Most of the forums pan the SA Gen 3 scopes
as being hit or miss and flimsy at best. I am by no means wealthy and a $2k scope is WAY out of the question. I am disabled, 50 years old and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. I believe the scope should have a lit reticle. There should be some kind of range finding apparatus like what is in the SA Gen 3 scopes
. The scope should have a bullet drop reticle for a .308.
