changing out Bogen tripod heads?

Question for anyone that might know: Have a Bogen Manfrotto T/P with a standard 3130 (simple left/right/up down swing however difficult to put camera in vertical mode if desired. Therefore bought a new Manfrotto Bogen head to replace other that came with TP. However the vertical rod that slips down through the tp and to which the old head (3130) is attached, appears not to be able to be removed from the vertical stantion. The implication is that it should simplly unscrew the old head and be able to screw on the new head. Question: how does on remove the old head in order to put on the new? I understand that sounds absurdly simple. Yikes. The new has a flat screw plate on the bottom of the whole assembly with a standard female screw hole up through the center, implying that the top of a vertaical stantion would have a male screw fitting onto which the new head would screw ONTO. The old has three small scews on the bottom but appear not to have any purpose and when removed, do nothing. The old vertical pipe or stantioni to which the old head is attached has a screw at the top center to which a "tighten down" screw" is screwed onto but that's all it seems to do. If I remoe that tighten down screw (which hold the left/right movement to a tighter degree or to no movement at all if very tight) Have found no way to remove the old head then. Dealer says they're interchangable.?? thanks to anyone with the knowlege to inform. Sincerley, Eugene Idea

On the heads I have changed it is a simple matter of locking the horizontal on the head and also the column, then rotating counterclockwise. Of course, if the head hasn't been removed in a long time, it won't be easy. I usually have a guy do it for me.
