What kind of Telescope should I buy?

I am a college student who is in an astronomy class, and I would like to have a good telescope to do some home viewing. What kind of telescope should I buy.

I would prefer to spend less the $500

In that price range there are tons of good telescopes.

Do you want interchangeable eyepieces, photographic or electronic imaging mounts?

Do you want automated tracking and searching capability?

Do you want a full size tripod?

Personally I feel the best all-round choice for astonomy is a Maksutov reflector--they are generally compact, easy to live with and provide bright images.
