Is this unit dependent on infrared or can it effectively be used
passively without IR. Are the factors such as degree of environment
illuminance etch.. determines its image details and clarity?

Hi

All gen 1 NV models such as LOMO ELF-1 Night Vision Scope - A2220 require the boost of an IR to function adequately under dark skies.

Hi,

Details and clarity are inherent in night vision units and ambient light does not change those figures. Gen one products can be used without IR illumination but are dependent on other light sources. This ELF unit will see under its own light no more than 50 yards, generally.
