I'm looking for a new rangefinder for hunting deer, elk and antelope in open country.

The Nikon Team Realtree Monarch 800 is only a few dollars less than the Nikon Team Realtree Monarch Gold 1200.

What are the differences between the two? Which is better for ranging out to 500 yards or so?

Which is the simplest to use?

Are both backlit?

Any others in the price range I should consider?

Appreciate any help you can give!

Hi

Both are backlit and both are simple, easy to use LRFs. The principle difference is the greater range of the 1200, but, in actual use, no LRF is going to be very effective if you are targeting deer at 500 yards. Most users pick a larger, easier to read object nearby, such as a large rock, tree, mound of dirt and so on. All in all, though, I like the Nikons and would recommend them.

Oops! Forgot to log in!

How about the Bushnell 1500 or the Leicas? How are they for ease of use, accuracy, features, etc. compared to the Nikons?
