I am looking for a very good quality m.scope for the hobby of nature study and microphotography. Besides slides,I will be looking at water or soil in a petri dish to observe small organisms. Is this the right type of scope, or should I consider a stereo scope.

Hi

A compound microscope is used to view microrganisms and it requires you to use slides. You cannot place something as large as a petri dish under a compund microscope.

If you want to examine soil samples for organisms, try a stereo microscope like the LOMO SF100. This will give you as much magnification as you will probably ever need (100x).
