Hey, sorry to bother you with the newbie stuff, but does anyone reccommend any particular brand over another? I've been doing quite a bit of research, and will probably end up going with a reflector of some sort (under 500-I'm a poor college student Cool ) It seems that there are a wide variety of reflectors in my price range that would let me do quite a bit with my new scope (please correct me if I'm wrong on that one).

Thanks for your help!

Hi

A reflector is the obvious choice if you want a serious telescope on a college student budget.

As for type, a Dobsonian is the simplest and easy to use, and also the most economical in terms of telescope size. The Dob has always been one of my favorites, but then I have been in astronomy long enough to navigate without a computer.

As for brands, Celestron and Meade are the Ford and Chevy of the telescope world. Good to have both around, because the competition keeps us supplied with lots of fun stuff.

Thanks so much for your help! It sounds as if I may be on the right track...

I found a refurbished Meade DS-2130AT (comes with warranty) for a great price..have you heard anything about that one? It's a 5", comes with Autostar, 1.25 eyepiece, and I believe 130mm. It looks pretty decent..

Thanks again, you rock! Very Happy
