Hi, its me again.
Celestron Firstcope 114EQ long tube telescope has in fact focal length of 900 mm. In comparison, the short tube version has 1000 mm focal length. As a result, the magnifications acheived by given eypieces is more for the shorter version than for the longer version. The short tube also weighs 16 lbs compared to 19lbs.
In spite of these clear advantages of shorter version over long tube, it is priced at $180 and the longer version costs $250 (Although amazon.com has it for $140...does your website have a mis-print ?)
Why is shorter version better and still cheaper? Are we people missing something? Is there anything hidden like shaky mounts for shorter version and more sturdy mounts for longer tube ? (Note: both advertise their mounts as equatorial)
Can you point out why? |

Hi Scopy
Yes, it can sometimes be confusing. A scope such as the short tube Celestron (or short tube Meade, and so on) uses a relay lens to increase the focal length of the telescope without actually adding extra length. This extra optical element allows for a long focal length in a short tube. This relay lens does not in itself improve image quality or correct defects, but it does offer the advantage of portability. _________________ ----------------------
