Hi,
I just orederd the Konus 65mm spotting scope. Will this bring me closer to scenic views(peoplem, cars, far awy objects)? I live on the bay and just wanted to see the other side pretty much. Is the second value what determines how close you can get? 100mm is more powerful but what does it mean in terms of getting close up? I dont understand why some scopes are alot more money. Is Konus a good starting point? |

Hi
The last number on a spotting scope is the size of the front lens in millimeters. All else equal, the larger this second number, the brighter the image and the better the image quality as magnification goes up.
The first or first two numbers on a spotting scope is magnification. Magnification is how many times the image is enlarged over normal, or to put it another way, how many times closer the image will appear when you look through the scope.
This your Konus is a 30x to 90x magnification scope with a 65mm front lens.
Two things always determine the price of any scope or binocular: optics and construction. If you want the finest in each, it will cost you. The finest spotting scopes will reveal detail and views that you will never see in your Konus and will out last the Konus many times over, but that is why they cost so much more. For causal use, you may find that the Konus works fine. _________________ ----------------------

| Cool, thanks for the quick reply and info. I like the Celestron C90 also. The Konus will let me see hoe the angled upward eyepiece is. The Konus seems like a smaller version minus the optics and quality. Im curious where Konus is made. Is it comparable to Tasco etc.? |

The Konus Maksutov 65 and the Celestron C65 MiniMak are both the same scope, built by the same people in China (Celestron is an American company and Konus is an Italian company--in this case, all they do is have their names printed on this Chinese designed/manufactured product).
On an absolute basis, it's not an outstanding scope optically--there are many spotting scopes that are brighter and sharper--but frankly these are excellent for the price. It will cost you more to get a brighter, sharper image and if you find the Konus satisfactory, it's hard to complain. The Celestron has a better warranty, though. |

| Oops, I just realized you may not have been referring to the Konus 65mm Mak (the Konuspot-90). Sorry if I confused things. I don't know anything about the Konuspot-65... |
