what would be a good scope around $300 for a .223 varmint gun used mostly for target shooting less than 150 yds.?

Hi
A Nikon Monarch 4-12x40 AO,

would be a great choice.

The Monarch is a good choice, as is the Weaver Grand Slam, or a Burriss FFII. Personally, I would not go above 10X. For the ranges that you are talking about, paralex is not really an issue. Thus you don't need ans AO.
