Hi,
I am looking for a tripod to use with my Canon EOS 300D and Canon 30D digital SLR cameras that I use with wide normal and telephoto lenses (the largest of which I have currently is the Canon 400/5.6 L). However, I may also use it occasionally with my small SONY camcorder.
I am looking for a tripod that will address the following issues:
1) I am 5' 7" tall. I want to be able to see through the viewfinder of my camera while standing straight, (i.e., without having to hunch forward). But, I am worried about the lack of stability if/when I extend the vertical pole of the tripod to its max. I take a lot of long exposure photos, and I want to minimize vibration from my tripod to the extent possible.
2) I also take some action photos. So a recommendation for a good matching head that allows for quick, fluid movements, and rapid release is important to me.
3) I travel a lot and carry my gear around on my back. So, light weight (yet sturdy) is an attribute I value greatly.
I am NOT knowledgeable about tripods at all; but, I do need one urgently. I would love to hear about the options that are available to me. Indeed, I would much appreciate being a little educated about this matter so that I can make a prudent choice.
Thanks,
~ JC ~ _________________ --

Hi
You will always lose some stability when you extend a center column, but as long as you start with a solid model, should be no problem.
You could get by with the basic Bogen 3180N, http://www.opticsplanet.net/bogen-manfrotto-3180n-tripod-and-head-kit.html but for added features like lever locks and leg warmers and, especially, reduced weight, try one of Bogen's carbon fiber models, such as the 701RC2, 055MFV, http://www.opticsplanet.net/bogen-view-fiber-kit-701rc2-055mfv.html _________________ ----------------------

I appreciate your response. I am certainly looking at a carbon fiber model. I have to decide which one I want.
Could you please point me to a listing of ball heads that can be used with these? I have heard not so good things about Bogen heads. Are there other brands you can recommend in addition to Bogen? I think I want the Swiss Arca type of connectivity.
Thanks,

Hi
Bogen certainly makes ball heads of a size suitable for an SLR, but we don't carry them. Our line of Bogens is aimed mostly at support for spotting scopes, since that is more our line of products. You can, however, find Bogen heads in the size range you want from a photo dealer such as B&H, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ _________________ ----------------------
