Hi

No reason you couldn't use a red dot on an air rifle, thoguh the usual 5 MOA size red dot may be a bit too big for precision work at very short ranges. Also, if you are using a spring-piston type air rifle, you will want to invest in a sturdy, well made unit that will stand up to the unusual recoil of this type of air rifle.
