I'm relatively new to target shooting and before I spend a fortune on a high end rifle and scope I need something to help me get into the swing of things.
My intention is only target shooting and I already have a 3-9 tasco on the gun but I'm told I need something higher power for an upcoming match. I don't want to spend more than about $300. What would be some good choices to research and what are some things I should look for in a new target scope?
Thanks |

Just about anything will be of better quality than your Tasco. What ranges are you talking about shooting? Most 1,000 yard competitions use fixed 10Xs.

| The current competition will be 100-200 yards but very small targets. It will be my first competition so not entirely sure what to expect yet. |

I am guessing from your post and choice of rifles that this competition thing is more or less just for the fun of it. At the ranges that you are describing, even a fixed 4X would work. Are you a varmint hunter? I am curious as to your selection of a .22-250 for competitions. I am not aware of any official competions as you are describing. Is this just a local thing? If you have the rifle just for the fun of it. I would suggest dumping the tasco and getting something along the lines of a Weaver Grand Slam in 3-10x40. This is a good all around scope, reasonably low-cost scope for what you get. There are better scopes, but I am assuming by your choice in rifles that you want to keep cost down.

Yes the competition is just a local thing for fun and my first of any organized events. My choice of rifle is that I've had it for years (picked it up at an auction fairly cheap) and didn't want to purchase anything else until I new more about the sport and wanted to get into it further.
From what I know so far its 52 rounds into 4 targets of varying size, at 100-200 yards, in a prone or kneeling position, within 30 minutes. The targets themselves can be from a 1/4-1/2" dot to an obstructed 2" silohuette (obstructed by a "hostage"). This probably isn't anything close to what a "real" rifle match is like but it sounds like fun for a first crack.
Thanks for your suggestion ranburr, I will look into the weaver scopes. |
