I want to adapt a gen-3 monocular for telescopic digital imaging by removing both the objective lens and eyepiece. I’ll replace the lens with a fitting to mate to the telescope. I’ll replace the eyepiece with a tube leading to a relay lens or macro lens that is attached to my C-mount digital video. Also, controllable gain (“variable gain”) is desirable. I’ve identified a few candidates and would appreciate any advice:

ITT Night Quest PVS-14
This unit seems to be the gold standard and I am currently favoring it.

ITT Night Quest 6010
As far as I can tell this unit is no different from the PVS-14, except for a slightly modified housing (and no variable gain): it looks like the lens fitting has a different thread/diameter that can be fitted to C-mount and the battery housing is modified to avoid interfering with a C-mount lens; it looks like the eyepiece can be more easily removed in order to attach the ITT relay lens. Are these the ONLY differences? (e.g. does the 6010 use a higher grade tube than the PVS-14?) The more easily adaptable housing would be nice but I don’t think it is worth an extra $1,200.

ATN 6015-3A
This looks like a knock-off of the PVS-14? Is the ATN “A” tube superior to the standard PVS-14? Is there any reason to favor this over the PVS-14?

ATN Night Spirit-3SELA
This looks like an ATN 6015-3A with a simplified housing and no variable gain. If so, then this might be tempting due to the price. Is the tube any different from the PVS-14 or 6015-3A?

Thanks!

Hi'

A 6010 or 6015 is a varitation of a PVS14. In terms of performance, all are using the same tube. Just be sure to spec out the resolution and grade of tube you want in terms of resolution. In a Gen 3, tube grade is the primary factor in price.

For your work, you may find it easier to work with a 6010, which has removable eyepiece and objective. It is basically a PVS-14 designed for use with a camera.

I don't see any PVS-14 or 6010 tube-grade or pricing options in your on-line catalog. Nor do I see any tube-grade specs for the default price. What is the default grade?

Are you saying that the lens &/or eyepiece cannot be removed from the PVS-14?

Thanks,
Stan

Hi

I am saying that the eyepiece and the objective on the PVS14 is not designed to be removed for the addition of accessories. It can be done, but cannot guarantee how easily.

For a 6010, see the ITT, http://www.opticsplanet.net/itt-night-quest-6010-gen-3-night-vision-monocular.html

I have a few questions about that unit:

1) what is the grade of the gen-3 tube? (e.g. defects by zone) Is it any better than the tube grade used in the PVS-14?

2) ITT makes a 2/3" relay lens to couple the 6010 to a video camera, but this item is not in your on-line catalog. Do you carry it?

3) If you do carry the 2/3" relay lens:
a) how does it accomdate different sized sensors? (I have a 1/2" CCD)
b) how does it focus?
c) will you accept a return if it fails to mate properly with my camera?

Thanks,
Stan

Hi

You can stick any grade Gen 3 tube in any model of gen 3 unit. A 6010 can use the same tube as a PVS-14, a 6105, a PVS-7 and so on. The tube is not model specific.

Sorry, we don't carry those ITT accessories, but you may wish to visit with ITT at http://www.morovision.com/
