Rangefinder for field inspection surveys

My company performs brush inspections for insurance purposes. We inspect homes near wildfire areas and we must measure the distance from the home to the nearest brush.

We cannot climb into the brush and point the rangefinder back at the home. Therefore we need a rangefinder that can provide an accurate reading of the distance to vegetation within 500 feet.

I am concerned that some of the laser rangefinders require a solid object to bounce the beam off. So I need to find a product that can read the distance to vegetation, rather than ignoring the vegetation to target an object further away. Also I would like the readout to be in FEET instead of YARDS.

I am considering the ATN 800 Laser Rangefinder, and I wonder if this would provide accurate measurements to brush conditions as described.

No LRF is going to give reliable readings off of brush on a consistent basis. You will need a solid surface to get a reading, at the very least a tree. Just the nature of this technology.

You are most likely to get a reading under tough conditions, though, with a high quality model, such as a Laser Tech Trupulse, http://www.opticsplanet.net/laser-technology-trupulse-200-range-finders.html than an economy model such as the ATN.
