I own an ATN MO4 right now and have been wondering, why would anyone magnify a gen 1 NV device 3x? I know it allows for more clarity close up within the range of the IR illuminator, but the device is basically useless past the range of the IR.

Why not make a 1x optic for the gen1 tubes that struggle as it is? Furthermore, I've been looking at selling off my NV device for a stealthview since it's all the rave, but the 5x is scaring me off some. Such is life though. Anywho, is there a quality gen1 device with just 1x. Also does the bushnell stealthview do well in performance with the 5x? I don't really see where it can, but I haven't tried it so I frankly don't know. I am planning on getting an IR lens for spotlight to enhance range of NV devices, but I wanted to know how the stealthview stacks up compared to the ATN MO4. I think I can basically get my money back selling off the MO4, if it is worth me paying the 100 extra dollars for the stealthview...

Hi

The problem with Gen and magnification is twofold. One, resolution on Gne 1 is low, so increasing magnification decreases image quality. Second, Gne 1 suffers heavily from fish-eye (barrel) distortion at the edge of the field and increasing magnification will definitely make it worse.

A digital offers both better resolution and it does not suffer from the distortion. Yes, the Stealthview at 5x is quite useable.

next question...

gen 1 is fairly useless without the IR light source, unless there is a gen 1 that is a 1x50 out there somewhere. Even then there won't be much to it. Is the digital stealthview basically the same, or is it actually useful without the IR light. Next question is if it is of little use without the IR spot, what kind of recognition range can you expect from the IR spot. Detection as in can recognize male female, lets say. Also... digital NV doesn't white out if pointed at white light, right?

Hi

You will still need an IR with a digital and there is some white out, so you will need to adjust the IR beam as needed.

No way to quote exact recognition range on any NV due to all the many variables involved, but I'd estimate 50 to 100 yards, depending on the conditions.
