What camera is right for our needs

I am looking for a digital camera to photograph my daughter during cheer completitions. most of my shots would be indoors from far away. I am an ametuer photographer. my husband and I were looking at the Sony DSC H9 which I have read in some of the reviews, this camera is hard to use. Can you tell me what you think will be a good camera for our needs.

I would not go with anything less than a digital SLR, such as the Canon XTi and the appropriate telephoto lens, such as the EF 70-200. You might also need a tripod and auxillary lighting to do it right if the light is low. What you are trying to do is simply beyond the capability of most digital point and shoot cameras.
