I was thinking of getting a Meade 114eq as a beginning astronomer, but am also a bird watcher. Would this be a good model to start with so I can see both the rings of Saturn and that eagle on a far branch? Any input would be great.

Thanks!

Hi

No, definitely not a good choice for daytime work. Reflectors produce upside down images and are not field worthy - simply too delicate to be moved a lot. Also, an equatorial mount is poor choice for birding - simply too cumbersome and slow to get lined up on a constantly moving bird.

A much better choice for your purpose is a refractor or Maksutov on an alt-az mount. Try the Celestron 90AZ
