In general, the larger the mirror, the fainter the objects that can be seen and therefore the more objects that can be seen. Larger mirrors also provide better image quality at higher magnifications. All else being equal then, the larger the mirror, the beter the performance.
However, there is more to telescope size than performance. A larger mirror means a larger scope physically. This means more weight and size and less portability. This also increases setup time. Larger scopes also require a longer cool down time before the optics are at their best - essentially, the mirror must be at the same temperature as the air before optical performance is optimal. In cold weather, this usually means at least 30 minutes for a 10 inch scope and proportionately less for a smaller scope.
If size, setup time, and cooldown time keeps you from observing when you have an opportunity, you definitely have too large a telescope. Be honest with yourself when you consider how much you are willing to handle after a long day at work when you are tired. As a friend of mine put it, "The best scope is the one you use the most." _________________ ----------------------
