Killing Eastern Coyotes

In the past few years the coyote population in my area has grown exponentially, mainly due to the fact that they have plenty of cover and no natural predators. I've tried hunting during the day with no luck, and I resorting to night hunting. I would be willing to spend $600 or less on a night vision scope, and will be mounting it on an AR-15 varmiter. What would you recomend?

Hi,

You're really limiting yourself witht he $600 limit, as most night vision riflescope cost considerably more than this. The least expensive way to go is the Yukon NVMT 3x42 Night vision Riflescope. This uses a visible laser to be your aiming device, and the night vision monocular is used to see in the dark.

Another option is a true Night Vision Riflescope such as the Night Owl Optics Night Shot 19/1 Night Vision Riflescope. This is more like a traditional scope with an internal reticle.

Both are Generation 1 and will be limited in their distance and clarity. All Gen 1 units have edge of field distortion that will look like you are viewing through a fishbowl.

Thanks for the advice! I'm living on a college student budget, so I think I'll end up getting a lower end scope for now until I can afford something better. These coyotes and bobcats are drivin me nuts!

What about the Yukon NVRS Tactical 2.5X50 Gen 1? I noticed that it is on sale for $599.

This is my first time on this forum. I apologize if I'm not in the right place.

I agree with the Clay about the inability to hunt coyotes in the daytime. I live in Georgia where 20 years ago, Coyotes were something you read about from out West. Now we are overrun with them and they don't come out during the day, even with calls and decoys.

I too am looking for a good night vision scope, only I have a little more cash to spend. I have several rifles, both bolt action and AR types. I also like the utility in a scope. I would like one that I could switch from rifle to rifle and could use both day and night.

Which scope will I get the most bang for my buck with? I have noticed the dual scopes for use both during the day and night. Are these pratical and worth the money? Is there a major difference between Gen 2 & 3?.....3 & 4?

Cost, of course, is always a factor but in this case, not a major one. Usefulness, praticality, and ruggedness are.

The best night vision unit available now is the ATN PS-22. The reason I say this is because it is made to work IN FRONT of a daytime scope, eliminating the need to change ocular pieces or swap scopes. It is available in second or third generation. Yes, there is a significant difference between second and third generation, but not so noticeable between third and fouth regarding picture. There is no need to swap or rezero scopes because they are not touched.
