I see many lights sold here use the CR123A batteries. What benefits do these have over standard alkaline batteries?

Also, if a flashlight uses AA or AAA batteries, would using lithium batteries instead alkaline alter performance at all?

Hi,

The CR123 batteries provide several benefits. First off is the power output. The CR123 battery is a 3v battery where AAA, AA, C, and D are all 1.5v. Twice the voltage from each battery can lead to a brighter flashlight in a smaller package. The Lithium batteries have a longer shelf life. They can last 10 years in storage without loss of performance. Lithuim batteries are also far less affected by heat and especially the cold. Alkaline battery performance is significantly reduced at temperatures below 32 degrees. Lithium batteries will also give more power throughout their entire life, where alkaline batteries drop in output throughout their lifespan.

Putting a Lithium AA battery into a standard AA flashlight will not make the light any brighter. Most basic flashlights will see a minimal lengthening of battery life with a lithium battery, but some higher end flashligts are voltage regulated to give peak performance throughout the life of an alkaline. These flashlights will see no benefit from a lithium battery. Where you will always see a benefit from a lithium is the cold weather life. If you are a hunter or camper who is frequently caught in the cold at night, you will benefit from a lithium battery. Lithium batteries also weigh considerably less than the alkalines.
