Spotting Scope for Birding

I may need to replace my old Spacemaster II scope and would like to find a good scope to use for general birding (ducks, shorebirds, etc.). I'd like one that's not oot heavy and not too expensive. I'd like to stay in the $200-$400 range, but could possibily go up to $500. How would you compare the Nikon Spotter XL II with some of the Bushnell scopes? Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi

The Spotter XL II is a specialty scope designed for portability, first and optics, second. For less money, the Nikon Prostaff has better optics and also offers optional eyepieces. I'd rate it a better choice for birding. Also excellent is the Vortex Sandpiper

I bought a new Konus 80mm spotting scope and had it set up in my office on the short tripod that came with it this week. This scope costs about $230 and I can am very well pleased. The 100mm goes for about $100 more.
