I'm trying to compare the Vortex Vipers and the Carson XM-HD's in a 10 X 42. The Vipers are almost twice the price. Carson claims that the XM-HD's rival bino's costing twice as much. Is this hype, or are the Carson's that good? How do the 2 compare?

Also, a local retailer has said that the Alpen Rainer's 10 X 42 are a very underrated binocular in the $800 price range. I haven't heard much about Alpen. Are they a good binocular?

Thanks![/b]

Hi

When you hit this price point (Carson XM HD), you are at best bang for the buck in a binocular. Beyond $300, you must pay much more for smaller increases in performance and quality. That's just the nature of the optics market. The Carson is a great value, but, no, it it is not a $600 binocular. Then again, it will be much closer to a $600 binocular in terms of optics than the price suggests. Really your decision on whether you want to pay more to get that extra margin of performance.

Addressing my second question, are the Alpen Rainers 10 X 42 a good value in the $800 dollar market?

Thanks!

Hi

You are very welcome.

As I said, you picked all winners and the Rainier is definitely one. Excellent Japanese binocular.

I've noticed that you seem to like the Bushnell Elite E2's. How do they compare with the Vortex Vipers in sharpness of image quality and low light performance in a 10 X 42?

Thanks in advance!
