I have 3 digital cameras: Nikon 5700 with a UR-E8 tele-adapter; a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 and a Nikon D-80 with an 18-55 zoom. I plan to photograph birds and other wildlife thru a scope. I would prefer to use the Nikon 5700 if there is a compatible adapter (Alpen ?). If not, what is your best suggestion for a scope with the other 2 cameras? Thanks for your time.

Hi

You can attach any small digital camera to nearly any spotting scope to take pictures through the eyepiece (digiscoping) with a universal style adapter such as the Alpen 706. However, you will have the nest success with the smaller cameras and the smaller lenses. The DSLR and digitals with large lenses (high zoom ratios) produce too much vignetting to be good choices for digiscoping.

Your scope is mostly a matter of your budget. Pic quality is a direct functioon of optical quality of the spotting scope - not the camera. That, in turn, is a direct function of price. Buy the best scope you can afford.

Thanx for your quick reply. On my Nikon 5700, the distance from the tripod screw hole is about 4 inches to the end of the lens. Will the Alpen 706 adapter fit using this camera and a Nikon Fieldscope 80ED?

Hi

No way I can guarantee something like that without having all the pieces on my desk. My best guess, however, is that you should be fine.
