| Need opinion on Celestron Ultima 100 ED. Seems to be at a lower price point ($449) as compared to other ED spotting scopes. I had pretty much decided on either the Alpen 788 or Vortex Skyline until I saw the Celestron. What am I missing here? |

Hi
Two things. First, a 100mm spotting scope is overkill for virutally any daytime application and, because of their size, you MUST use a heavier and more expensive tripod. Scopes this size are NOT fieldworthy. Second, this ED scope use the same inexpensive, mediocre eyepiece as the $150 model. ED is a great option, but you will never realize its potential with a poor eyepiece and Celestron does not offer any other eyepieces for the Ultima. I would reagrd the Alpen or the Skyline as much better and more practical choices. _________________ Thanks for posting with us

| Does anyone on the board have specific, side-by-side, experience with the Vortex Skyline and the Alpen 788? All info seems to point to these units being very similar. Any one or two issues on the Vortex that warrants spending the additional $37? |

Hi
Yes, have tested both, though not side by side. I can, however, recommend either. My personal preference? I like the Vortex by a slight margin for its build quality - just feels and handles like a quality scope. Be be hard pressed, thoough, to make any claims that it is a significantly better scope. _________________ Thanks for posting with us
