I have wanted to buy real good spotting scope for more than a year now and think I have done my homework.
I will use the scope for long range target shooting and hunting. The scope must be able to discern 30 caliber holes on a target at ranges in excess of 300 yds (under the right light and heat conditions). Weight is not a real problem as I will use a smaller, lighter scope for backpacking conditions.
Ever since I purchased my Leica 10 x 42 binoculars I have not been satisfied with average optics and I am not going to compromise on this purchase; though it would be a stretch for me to tie up $2000-$2500 for a spotting scope.
I think that the Pentex PF-80ED (straight body) is the kind of spotting scope I am looking for. I like the idea of using universal eye pieces and have heard very good reviews of the Pentex eyepiece optics. Is this the scope for me? Other options or scopes I should consider? |

Hi
Yes, I would certainly recommend the PF80-ED and, like you, I think the ability to use standard telescope eyepieces is a great feature. Just remember, if you want to get the most out of this scope, you are going to have to get a high grade telescope eyepiece equivalent in price and quality to a spotting scope eyepiece used on any other high grade spotting scope. Just because you can get a telescope eyepiece for $50, does not mean you should use it. In this scope, the Pentax XWs are simply fabulous and worth every penny. Aren't going to do better in an eyepiece for this scope. _________________ Thanks for posting with us

Thanks for the prompt reply, one more question. OP lists the Pentax PF 80ED straight body kit (KU 70114) with the 20 x 60 zoom eye piece (#70509). Is this the quality eyepiece I want for this scope? I understand that fixed eyepieces will usually yield a better quality..but a zoom works best for my applications.
I am just trying to decide if I should buy the kit because of the great price or buy the body and add another zoom eye piece of a higher quality. I will probably purchase a fixed power eye piece later for celestial viewing/ birding etc.
Suggestions
Thanks

Hi
Yes, the zoom supplied with the PF80 (but not the PF65) is an XW grade eyepiece. Excellent zoom, optically, but, like all zooms, you give up field of view. I would have no problem recommending it. _________________ Thanks for posting with us
