Easy,Bushnell Elite 4200 3x9 scope and that should leave you about $500 dollars for a DECENT set of binocs. I can't comment on the binocs cause I'm not really up on just whats out there.

til later

I'll second that choice of scopes. The Elite 4200 3-9x40 is one of the best values available, until they run out. An excellent binocular to go with to compliment that scope is the Bushnell Elite E2 8x42. This is an excellent model with great image quality and durability. This, plus the 4200, will run just below your $800 mark.

I will be the fourth to support that choice. I am holding Big Squeeze's place in line since I am always jumping ahead of him. Smile He should be third to vote for that choice. Its a great way to go for the money.

I disagree with the above recommendations. 3-9x40 is a general scope that people buy because they don't know what they will be hunting...

First of all, what type of elk hunting are you going to do? I assume you will hunt with dogs. So you probably need to do fast shots, sometimes at quite close distances.

I would recommend you get the Zeiss Conquest 1.8-5.5x38 with the german #4 rectile (~$400). A 2nd alternative would be the Leupold VX-III 1.75-6x32 with the heavy duplex rectile (~$400). The Docter 1.5-6x42 is a great scope with higher lens quality, but the cost is out of your range (~700). I would personally spend the extra money and get the Docter.

What comes to binoculars, I don't have any recommendations because you don't necessary need any binoculars for elk hunting.

..............................Hey G-Man..........You were actually the 3rd to recommend the Elite 4200! I will be the 4th to recommend the 3x9 Elite 4200!!!.........Contrary to what the above "GUEST" has stated, I bought my 3x9, EVEN THOUGH I KNEW DARN WELL WHAT GAME I WAS GOING TO HUNT, THE SHOOTING DISTANCES AND THE TERRAIN!..... I can assure you that everyone who buys a 3x9 scope is not ignorant to the game, the distances or the terrain! However, that`s not to say that his variable recos won`t do the trick, because they will!........A 3x9 power is the best all around hunting variable there is!! 3x on the low end is good enough for closer shots on elk, say at 20-30 yards if necessary! The 9x on the high end is good enough for a 400 to 500 yard shot IF NECESSARY on either elk or deer, where as with some eyes, a 4x to 6x may not be comfortable enough!.... If however, the majority of your elk hunting is in thicker brush and at shorter ranges under 200 yards, then I`ll agree with the above guest, even though a 3x9 would do nicely under those conditions......With that said, I also have a 1.5-5x20 VX3 Leupy, which is going on a 20" barreled, Howa M1500 .375 Ruger arriving later this year! That variable is better suited for a dangerous game .375 rifle, while a 3x9 is better suited for the 30-06!......... For the price, you will not go wrong with a 3x9 Elite 4200 w/ the Rainguard! Have one on my 300 WSM. It is the best scope on the market for the money!!......Along with the 4200, you`ll also be able to buy real good binocs and put some money back into your pocket too.

Where do you hunt elk with dogs? I've never heard of that. I know they use drivers with red stag in Europe but I have never heard of using dogs.

There is no better deal than the bushnell elite 4200 3-9x40 but I personally like 2.5-10 power range. It costs about $100 more for the bushnell elite 4200. Gives you a little more on both ends. I have a nikon monarch gold on my 300 win mag. I have had several really close shots as well as running shots which I did not take because I don't like shooting at running deer but I was able to get very fast target aquisition in both situations.

The bushnell elite 6200 2.5-16x42 looks really good but then you would only have about $100 for binos.
