Fixed power tougher?

Are fixed-power scopes really tougher, more durable, more trouble-free than comparable variables, or is that idea outdated?
Does anybody have any data on return rates, repair frequency, or tests, that would answer this one way or the other?

.....................Fixed power scopes have less internal/external parts than do variables. However, regardless of any return ratios, a variable always gives much better versatilty for the hunter/shooter, which is why I have always owned a variable...... As far as fixed scopes being more durable? I think that could be a matter of splitting hairs here!....Anything man made can always go defective. Fixed or variable scopes are not an exception.........
