Would like to try digiscoping and already have a Nikon Coolpix 4500. Can you recommend a spotting scope and camera adapter that will produce good quality photos in a backyard/deck setting? Want to keep costs as close to $1,000 as possible -- would also consider certified used equipment. Suggestions?

Hi

Sorry, we don't deal in used equipment.

About the only way to add that camera to any spotting scope, even a Nikon, is with a universal digiscoping adapter, either a rail style adapter, such as the Alpen 706 or the heavier duty Nikon or a bracket style adapter, such as the Williams.

For a scope, look for a model with an ED lens and, if possible, optional fixed power wide angle eyepieces, which are better choices for digiscoping than zoom lenses. Try the Pentax PF80ED body with a Pentax XW20 (26x) eyepiece.

For the latest update on digiscoping, including recommendations on spotting scopes, cameras and adapters, see my article Digiscoping 2008 Update

Thanks for such a quick response - a quick follow-up after reading your article. If I were to spend a few hundred dollars on one of the recommended digital cameras - would the Pentax still be the best choice?

Hi

Yes, at that price point, it is your best option. The scope, not the camera, is the most important part of a digiscoping setup. Put your money into the scope.
