Hello I currently have a .50 BMG rifle, my scope bit the big one last week, I need a replacement, in your opinion what will take the punishment of recoil and be accurate out to 1500m.
Not worried about price, just quality..
Thanks

zlsnI have heard that Barrett is offering the new Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24X50mm tactical scope with 30mm tube and mildot reticle with their rifles as one option pre mounted and bore sighted. This was from a person who just bought 2 of them and had them on Savage tactical rifles in 300 Win mag and 308. He said he bought them based on Barrett offering them on their high power rifles.
On the Barrett Website they currently show that they are matching their rifles with Leupold Mark IV scopes and their new ballistic computer that mounts directly on the scope. It fits onto and only works with the Mark IV's (several in the series). The ballistic computer is called the BORS for Barrett Optical Ranging System. If you would be considering to get such a system in the future you would want the scope it fits on. A friend I see at the range about once a month has a Mark IV on his 416 rifle and I haven't heard any complaints. The rifle had originally come with the Bushnell 3200 fixed 10 X mildot tactical scope and his only complaint was no higher power mag. He's had his for a while. It would appear that Barrett had some level of faith in the Bushnell series scopes for those who didn't want to pay the prices of the Leupold Mark IVs.
Cheytac shows in their videos that they use the Nightforce scope on their 408 long range rifles. I have seen their videos showing them shooting out to 2500 yards with great success.
I don't own anything that big, I can only refer to what I have seen at the range and heard good and bad about. I will say I go to the range a lot and check out everyone's equipment. Have not heard or seen anything bad about the Leupold Mark IV series, the Nightforce scopes (which to me are absolutely gorgeous to look through), and the Bushnell 4200 series.
I would say to check out the Barrett website and see if that BORS system interests you, if you think this is the way that you might go in the future than you pretty much will be locked into the Leupold scope.
The only other scope that I hear works well is the Tasco Super Sniper that they build under contract for the US Navy. These are fixed power scopes, no zoom. Not the same as the hunting rifle lines. The adustable objective ring is in the back where the zoom ring would normally go on a zoom mag range scope. Very easy to use, I have played with it at the range on a couple of guns, it is handy and easy to adjust from the rear of the scope for what that is worth. I have seen these at the range and heard no complaints, but not from guys with big caliber guns. There is something to be said for the reliability of a non zoom scope.
As to a separate who'd a thunk it story at the range from just this Saturday, a couple of guys come in and start pounding at the steel plates 100 yards away with a vengeance. One had a M1A in 308 and a Leupold tactical scope and made those plates cry out with every shot just standing their shooting off hand like it was 20 yards away not 100.
The other guy had a 460 caliber bolt action rifle that would literally bring down an elephant. This guy was big and the recoil was pushing him around pretty bad. The point of this story is that he had a Leupold Rifleman series scope on this big bruiser of a gun. I asked him about it and he said that the more simpler scopes that had less parts held up better to the abusive recoil of the big gun and that it was working well. Can't argue with success is all I can say to that. It was a simple 3x9.
I stood off to the right side and watched him shoot this thing several times, it was pushing his shoulder back about a foot and he would have to step back in order to keep from falling over backwards after the shot.
I try to keep in touch with all these guys at the range as much as possible to see what is working and what is not. Take it for what its worth.
Good luck in your search. |
