I have a remington 7400 rifle with a Leupold VX-II 3-9-40 mm scape. I run out of evelation adjustment prior to raising the shot to hit the Bull's eye on the target. I am hitting the target about 22 inches below the Bull's eye. After bore sighting the rifle, I only have 8-10 clicks left on the elevation on the scope and this is not enough to raise the shot to hit the Bull's eye. The scope is mounted using Millett scope rings which are "medium" in height. I sent the rifle back to Remington. They checked the rifle and stated that the rifle is shooting accurate. Can you give me some guidance? Is something wrong with the scope? The scope is brand new purchased in August 05.

Personally, I would get rid of the millet rings and get a set of Leupold rings (Redfield style). I prefer a one piece base, but a two-piece is also fine. You may be able to use low rings, it depends on your rifle. Once you get the rings installed, re-bore sight and re-zero. If you are still hitting low, you are going to have to shim your base. Lots of people have experienced problems with Millett rings.

You need to raise the rear of the scope up. either in the mount, or raise the entire rear mount on the rifle. The mounts may not have been the optimum for that rifle. By raising the rear of the scope up. That will lower the scope's point of aim in relation to the barrel and bring the point of bullet impact up. I had a similar problem with a set of scope mounts and got some aluminum shimstock and raised the rear mount up 20 mils which raised the point of aim for my rifle 9 inches, approximately. Nine inches is worth 36 clicks at 100 yards for most scopes with 1/4 inch adjustments at 100 yards even. Based on the distance from the front o rear ring, the amount of adjustment to off set the scope mount will be more or less. the closer the 2 rings are to each other, the less amount of offset necessary to raise or lower point of impact. You may have to go 30 mils for the amount of offset you are observing to get closer to centerline.

If you can't raise the rear mount, some people cut a deeper hemisphere into the front ring to lower the front. This is a lot of work, usually need a machine shop type set up to do a good job, keep the circle smooth and not go to far.

Otherwise try a more standard type set of mounts.

Do you have enough room to use lower rings because this will improve your aim point.

I have the exact same problem. I just bought a brand new Remington 7400 and also a new Leupold VX-I 4X12 40 mm scope. I have the standard Leupold one piece base and low 1" Leupold rings. I shot 2 boxes of shells through it and could never adjust the height of the scope high enough to hit the bulleye. I ran out of height adjustment and it was still about 8"-10" low. I even returned the scope for a replacement and the new Leupold VX-1 has the same problem....ran about 2 boxes of shells through it...left/right adjustment was fine but the height just would not get there.

I'm using the recommended scope mount for this gun from Leupold. I even went to their sight and used their mount selector and everything was exactly correct.

I think that there is just something up with this combo of the Leupold scope and the Rem 7400...as crazy as this sounds...it doesn't seem that they play well together. The only thing I can try next is maybe higher rings or do some modifications to lower the rear ring. If this doesn't work I'll probably dump the Leupold scope and go to something else. I've never had anything like this happen to me before...it just blows my mind that I've shot 4 boxes of shells and this thing still isn't sighted in. Rolling Eyes..I guess I shouldn't have never went away from the Remington 700 but I just had to have something different...but I know it's not the rifle...this rifle shoots really great groups for an semi-auto...I'm very pleased with the rifle's performance...I just need to get a scope that works.

Here's what the mount selector recommends from Leupold

BASE

STD - 760 (1 piece)
Gloss: part #49992

RINGS

STD 1" - Low Gloss:
part #49897

Matte:
part #49898

Silver:
part #49899

Anyone else have any ideas? Question

All you need to do is shim the base. this is a 5 minute fix.

Thanks ranburr...I think I going to try that right now...I just cut some shims...do you suggest raising the rear or lowering the rear? I need to bring where the bullet hits up abotu 8-10 inches...

You need to raise the rear by about no less than 10 and no more than 20 mils. Silly Question just to make sure. Is the horizontal adjustment on the right side of the scope and rifle or is it on the left? You don't have your vertical/horizontal adjustments mixed by chance by having the horizontal on the left (which would actually be the scope's vertical adjustment) and then the vertical adjustment on the top would actually be the horizontal adjustment that needs to go on the right side of the scope. Some scopes say U/L D/R on either set of control knobs but most scopes do not have as much adjustment range in their horizontal plane as they do in the vertical. If you have been using the scope this way you want to roll it over so that the horizontal adjustment is on the right side, even if you are left handed.

Back to shimming the scope. Take a measurement of front to rear rings from front edge to front edge and get back to me on the BB when you get a chance.
