I have owned a rifle for 35 year. I have been hunting with shotguns, but I just retired and plan on doing some big game hunting. The rifle choice seem easy for me, but I am really confused on scopes. I am thinking of a luepold or zeiss. Please help. If you know about mounts that would be a great help too.
Thanks. |

Thanks. | ......................It is certainly very easy to be confused as to which scope to buy as there are many choices..........You cannot go wrong with either the Leupold VX3 or the Zeiss Conquest. I`d consider only the VX3 in the Leupy dept..........Another option would be the Bushnell Elite 4200 w/Rainguard. Although a very small fraction brighter for the Zeiss, optically, many cannot see the difference between the Zeiss and the 4200 to justify the extra cost, including me!............Like many, don`t get caught up in sterotyping the 4200 as the cheaper/lower quality Bushnell scopes of the past. The 4200`s are way and far above that!............I had a conventionally mounted 3x9 4200 on my 300 WSM Ruger Frontier compact and absolutely loved it. However on that rifle, I much prefer a lighter, faster to target, scout scope set up and traded it for the 2.5-8x28 Nikon Monarch EER UCC. That Nikon and my 4200 compare very closely with hardly a difference optically..............The 3x9 is your best all around hunting variable for any hunting ranges you`re going to do with the `06. A 2.5x10 or a 3.5 x10 for hunting would be ok too, but above that is not necessary and it costs more.............For your `06, I`d play with these possibilities in 3x9; Nikon Monarch, Zeiss Conquest, Leupy VX3, or the Elite 4200 if still available. All would be just fine...........I also have a 1.5-5x20 VX3 German #4, waiting to be mounted on a 20" tubed .375 Ruger Howa M1500 which I ordered and is coming in the fall. The VX3 is a bright and clear scope as well. |

You could look at the Leupold VXIII 2.5-8.
Wide field of view and good for close up work at low power. Adequate magnification for big game at reasonable ranges on higher power. |

The scopes mentioned are great scopes. At this moment it becomes personal choice. I personally have a Sightron Big Sky 4x16x42 with fine cross hairs and dot and it is great for long distance as the dot and the lines will not obscure your target at long range. The knobs are finger adjustable and resettable to zero. It keeps its track and zero after shooting several 100 rounds of 150 grain federal 30-06 . The optics I feel compare to the scopes mentioned if not just a bit bright and sharper to my eyes. As mentioned before it tracks beautifully as I did the "BOX" adjustment and the moa are 1/8 clicks with 80 moa of elevation. I bought my scope last year for $499, now I think they go for about $569. I can see bullet holes at 200 yards with 16x and the image remains just as sharp as in the lower power. The front objective has a fast focusing ring which you dial to...for example 500 yds and the focusing will be very close depending on your eyes. I simply love this scope. I am getting another one for my new Tikka T3 30-06 in 6x24x42 hopefully by next month. _________________ Always run away from a fight...but if they catch you send them to hell. |
