Digiscoping with Nikon 50mm

Joanie,

Took your suggestion a few weeks ago to pick up the Nikon 50 MM ED for backpacking/Hunting. very light...great choice! I would like to start digiscoping with it. Need some advice.

1) I noticed the 40x was on here for about $269. Is that the best for digiscoping animals out here in the West? Will it work well with that high of a magnification and clear pictures?

2) Would you go with the 27X? It just does seem like that would cut it. I just returned home from Zions NP and I had the scope with me and 27x dialed in on the 13-30 zoom just didn't seem to get much closer.

3) Would the 13-40x zoom be better for a longer distance. However, you cannot digiscope with this correct?

4) Which Nikon coolpix camera would you recommend? and the bracket to go with it?

5) Any small very lightweight tripods to go with?

Hi

Glad to hear you are enjoying your new Fieldscope.

Way off on the magnification, though. 20x magnification is plenty for an eyepiece, especially if you kick in 2x or 3x optical zoom on the camera. Too much magnification, especially in such a small scope, will cut down on image brightness and that, in turn, increases shutter lag, meaning lots of blurred pics. The lower the magnification, the more keepers when it comes to pics. Keep the magnification down!

We are not a Nikon camera dealer, so not a lot of experience, there. Be aware, though, that not all Coolpix models work with Nikon digiscoping adapters. Has to be an exact match with the adapter. Close does not count. Check the adapters, first, then pick your Coolpix model.

Awesome on the response time...how do you do it?!? Thanks for the suggestions. Any thoughts on the light tripod? Doesn't have to be full scale in size, I may be sitting. Looking for 2-3 pounds at best. Carbon fiber great, if not, no big deal.

Hi Mike

Just happend to be in the neighborhood, so to speak, but I do try to stay on top of my part of the forum.

In a compact, the Leupold Compact is the best we carry. uses a metal ball head and would be a dandy choice for a 50mm scope.

Joanie,

Was just looking to place and order with you guys this morning and had a question that Scott could not answer.

I decided for now I would get the exrtra extension of range and order the 13-40x eyepiece and look to digiscope in a few months

However I was drooling over a few tripods and willing to carry the extra weight.

Will the Nikon Manfrotto 848 tripod head remove and allow me to use a manfrotto pistol grip action head I already own?

This would give me basically the same setup as the Nikon manfrotto 849 Pro tripod you guys are offering.

If the 848 does not have the same threading, do you have an attachment or other threads for purchase that I could use on the 848? I just don't want to have to buy another manfrotto pistol grip head if I don't need to. The 848 gives me better options.

Hi

Yes, that will work, since it is basically a Bogen leg set and all Bogen leg sets use a 3/8" stud to mount the head. Still cheaper than buying a regular Bogen leg set and it would give you an extra tripod head.
