Greetings,

thanks for having such an informative site. I'm ready to buy a solid waterproof spotting scope that is in the range of 400-600 dollars. I need a scope that will perform well in low light condition spotting big game under typical conditions. I don't need to count the hair on a deer eyelash at 300 yards, but want a clear spotter that can identify deer clearly at dawn and dusk.

thanks for your advice! I look forward to picking one out of your great selection.

Hi

Best choices in that price range include:

=Alpen 788 20-60x80

Vortex Skyline 20-60x80

If you can spend a little more, the Nikon Prostaff and the Bushnell Elite 20-60x80. Price is always an excellent inidicator of quality and performance in a spotting scope.

I keep hearing the vortex scope come up and am leaning that why. Nikon has a good reputation as well. Would it be worth it to go for the skyline ED? I'm willing to stretch the budget a bit. Between the vortex skyline ED and the nikon prostaff, which one would be the best buy?

Take care and thanks so much for this service. It is extremely helpful and gives one confidence when making a purchase.

Hi

The ED is tempting, of course. If you plan to be using the scope at magnifications above 40x on a regular basis, the ED is worth it. You wll notice the difference. On the other hand, I like the fact that the Nikon offers a selection of optional eyepieces. That makes it a more versatile scope. Really your call. Can't go wrong with either.
