I have a Canon PowerPowershot S5 IS. I use it mainly to take pictures of birds, squirrels, flowers and wild life in general. I live on the Texas coast and love taking pictures of pelicans and seagulls, etc. Can you recommend a spotting scope and adapter that can be used with this camera? Thank you.

Hi

A camera that large is less than ideal for digiscoping due to its large lens size. Although it may seem counterintuitive, cameras with small lenses make the best cameras for digiscoping.

About the only option on a camera like that is the Nikon universal, but it can be used with nearly any spotting scope. As for the scope, buy the best scope you can afford. Pic quality is mostly a function of spotting scope quality, not the camera.

For the latest update on digiscoping, including recommendations on spotting scopes, cameras and adapters, see my article Digiscoping 2008 Update

Thanks for the reply. I have another option I'm looking at. I was thinking about binoculars that take digital pictures. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Raquel

Hi

No digital bino would even come close to what you could get with a 12x zoom camera like your S5IS by itself without a spotting scope, not to mention what you could get with the S5IS behind a spotting scope. Don't waste your money on a digital binocular.
