I recently bought a used Etx-90. I wanted to see if I liked it before I invested more into it. I'm having a hard time getting the goto feaure to work correctly. It's close but I still have to manually slew it. My question is about the 8" LX200GPS or the newer 8" LX90GPS. Is the GOTO feature more accurate than the ETX-90 because of the GPS and LNT. Also, will the series 4000 eyepieces work in that scope. Finally, is the 8" LX200GPS worth the extra cost.

Jim:

I recently received a Meade ETX-80 for Christmas and was initially disappointed with the GoTo feature. However, I did two things that really seemed to help.

First, follow the instructions in the manual for training the drive. Makes a big difference.

Second, when putting the scope in the "Home" position, I align it manually with Polaris and I don't use the little compass. I noticed that when I put the compass near the metal tube, it (the compass) slewed about 15-17 degrees off of north.

Hi

The Series 4000 eyepieces will work in any scope, so no problem there.

The LNT module, when it works, makes correction a bit easier, assuming you have the red dot correctly adjusted for your scope. The GPS on the LX200 is also more precise in that you get your exact position from the outset, instead of a general position as with a zip code.

Going to an LX90 or LX200 GPS, though, is more a matter of going to a larger scope with more perfromance. The LX200 fork is a bit stiffer and a better mount, but the LX90 is still a great scope. I'd recommend either for a serious, do-it-all kind of telescope.
