I just purchased a Marlin 17VS, chambered for .17HMR. The rifle has a stainless steel, bull barel and a grey wood stock. I will be using the rifle mainly for target shooting, but varmint hunting is fun too. I am looking for a scope that will not only be functional for both targets and varmints, but will look good on top of my rifle. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi

The issue here is how much you are wiling to pay for a scope to mount on a rifle at that price. There is no shortage of inexpensive Chinese varmint scopes from BSA, Barska, Tasco, Optronics, Simmons, Winchester and others if that's the way you want to go. Quality will be pretty much the same, so pick one with the features you want.

Personally, I would be willing to sacrifice some features and opt for a better built, if plain, riflescope. Beauty is as beauty does and this is never more true than when looking through a good optic. If it was my gun and I was on a limited budget, I'd begin with something like a Swift (made in Korea) 4-12x40 (676S), http://www.opticsplanet.net/swift-4-12x40mm-premier-riflescope-676-676m-676s.html and work my way up from there. It's no Elite or VX-II, but it is a cut above most of the made in China stuff.

Good point on the price range. I would say the $150-$250 range is fairly suitable to my current budget. Again, thanks for the help.

In that price range I would look at the Weaver Grand Slam, Burris FFII, and Bushnell Elite 3200. In that order.
