hey all
Just bought my first telescope n having some trouble setting it up. Its a Seben telescope, instructions are poorly translated from german so finding it hard. Ive read lots of peoples posts here about it all seeming black when you look at anything. When i look into the tube through the eye piece,i can see my fingers at the if i pass them over the end. However when i put the 1.5x Erecting eyepice on + the biggest number lens H20 i cant see anything? Am i doing something wrong? or not? im really puzzled. Thanks for any help much appreciated!

Hi

If this is your very first telescope, you need to become thoroughly familar with its operation before taking it out at night and using it for astronomy. I suggest setting it up by day and targeting a distant object on the horizon. This will give you all the image brightness you need optically and daylight is a better time to become familar with all the telescope controls. Don't worry if the images are upside down (reflector) or reversed right to left (refractor and catadioptrics). The idea here is to practice before trying to use the scope at night.

Insert the eyepiece with the biggest number into the focuser. Do not use the barlow. When you have mastered focusing with this eyepiece, go to a lower numbered eyepiece or add the barlow. When you have mastered focuing by day and are confident with all telescope controls, you and your scope are ready for astronomy.

If you are still having problems, there is good chance you have a scope problem. If this is the case, your best option is to have someone look at the scope who knows telescopes. There are simply too many possibilities to give you a definitive answer from this point.

Thanks for the advice. I havent had a chance to try it out in the daytime yet i will give it a try. I just find it weird that as soon as i put in the lens and the eye piece i cant see anything even in a brightly lit room, yet i can see through both of them seperately. thanks for all help il have to spend some time on it this weekend cheers Very Happy
