I am looking to buy a spotting scope and am ignorant as to what the numbers stand for regarding magnification etc. Could you give me a quick education on this?
Also, what size (if that's the right term) scope would best suit my needs for both bench shooting and spotting elk in the West?
Thanks in advance.
The numbers in spotting scopes work the same way as a pair of binoculars. The first number will represent the magnification or range of magnification. The second number is the mm measurement of the objective lens.
For example: 15-45X60 means you have a range of magnification of 15-45x. Your objective lens would be 60mm which is good.
As for what size scope you would be looking for, I would suggest something like a 15-45X60. I would not go any smaller.
