I recently purchased the Eagle Optics Raven 20-60x78 Spotting Scope and in the instruction manual it indicated that there was an additional 30x Wide Angle eyepiece that could be purchased for viewing hawks and diving ducks. According to eagle optics this eyepiece has been discontinued. It also said that the Kowa Interchangeable Eyepieces for Kowa 66mm / 60mm Spotting Scopes happen to fit the raven scopes and that they would significantly upgrade the raven scope. We're happy with the scope as is but I was just wondering what it would cost for a 30x WA eyepiece for the raven scope. I also just wanted your opinion on whether this would be worthwhile. Do you really get all that much more field of view?

Hi,

Kowa Interchangeable Eyepieces for Kowa 66mm / 60mm Spotting Scopes will not ID more birds for you than your present 20-60x; in fact, it will not ID as many due to its lower magnification. Optical quality will be better than the zoom set at 30x, as will the field of view. I regard it as a great choice for digiscoping and it will be a very nice, comfortable eyepiece for scanning the lake for waterfowl and shore birds, but it will not ID more ducks and geese, despite the advertising by Eagle Optics.
