What is your suggestion for night vision optics, partial and total darkness for our work in wildlife research. We work in all weather, swamps and woods, and grants do not leave us much money for equipment.

Performance is directly realted to the generation of the Night Vision Device used. The higher the generation - 1, 2, 3 - the greater the distance you will see and the more detail you will see. Gen 1 units run around $200-300 and can typically detect deer sized animals at ranges of 50-75 yards in the woods at night. Smaller animales will require you to get closer. Gen 2 will extend your range 25-50 yards, but will typically run $1000. Gen 3 will get you out to 150-200 yards, but will run $3000+

Here are some good choices,

Gen 1,
ATN MO4 Night Vision Scopes MO4-1
Night Owl Explorer Series 3X Explorer Night Vision Monoculars

Gen 2,
Yukon NVMT 2x24 Gen 2+ Multitask Night Vision Monocular 24023

Gen 3
ATN Gen 3 Night Vision Monocular, 6015-3, handheld, head/helmet-mounted NVD
