We would like either binoculars or monoculars for night safaris. We would be using them for one trip so do not want to put a lot of money into them.
What would you recommend?

Thanks!

Hi

First, I would definitely take a conventional daytime binocular, say an 8x42, with you for general use and you will find it useful for observing well beyond sunset.

For an actual night vision device, I'd go with a monocular if you are concerend with price. The only advantage of a night vision binocular is that it gives you more viewing comfort, but it does not have any more range or performance than a good nightvision monocular. Lastly, remember that nightvision devices are about seeing in the dark and not about seeing at great distances, so keep magnification down for best performance.

One of our favorites of ours here at OpticsPlanet is the Night Owl 3x Exlporer, http://www.opticsplanet.net/night-owl-explorer-series-3x-monoculars.html It is easy and comfortable to use and will not cost you a mortage on the house.
