Is it better to start with a 1x24 NVMT Yukon and add lenses or go with a 2x24? I am more concerned with FOV and clarity than magnification.
I am almost ready to purchase one of the Yukon NVMT monoculars for home defense however reading the posts I am now stuck debating whether I should purchase a 1x24 and add lenses as needed or just go with The 2x24 and be done with the debate. I will add additional IR illumination either mounted on the Yukon or via IR spotlights, etc. I was also looking at the ATN viper/cougar and bushnell. They are a bit more expensive but if they work better from a hands-free defense standpoint then I'll purchase one of those. My price limit is around $500US.
The NVG will be used for home defense and most likely will be coupled with a headmount for hands-free use. Which brings up another question, is a gen 1 device even good enough for use during hostile power outage scenarios? Would focusing issues make this a pointless technology from a gen1 standpoint? |

Hi
if you are more concerned with field of view and clarity, stay with the 1x. As magnification, goes up field of view goes down and in night vision, as magnification goes, image quality also goes down. In addition, if you are planning to use these hands free, a 1x will provide a natural viewpoint of the world around you. _________________ ----------------------

Thank you, that is what I had assumed but it's nice to hear from the experts!
I am leaning towards the Yukon 1x24 for the limited lifetime warranty but is the ATN viper superior in any way such as quality of optics, focus, FOV, etc? It has been almost impossible to find any sort of meaningful reviews. We get hellacious snow storms sometimes with the typical power outages and my wife is getting seriously concerned about hands free mobility during extended power outages. |

Hi
I would rate the ATN as similar, but not superior in any way. Both are good products. _________________ ----------------------
