You will most likely lose the ability to co witness on your 94 with adding a red dot. A great one to look at is the Fastfire by Burris. This is a great mini red dot that would work very well for you. Its extremely tough and can take a beating and just keep coming.

I'm setting up a Marlin 1894 as a home defense rifle and am thinking about mounting a red dot/reflex sight with a XS ghost ring and post as back-up. I have no experience with red dot sights. I would like something that I can forward mount and will not throw off the balance of the rifle. As this is going to be a defensive weapon, I am looking for ruggedness and reliability as primary points in making my decision on what sight to go with.
