John,
Thank you for your interest in www.OpticsPlanet.com. You have started yourself in a great price range. This will open up a few great beginner to intermediate telescope that will last awhile. I would recommend one of the following:
http://www.opticsplanet.com/ci-nextstar-130gt.html. Celestron 130 GT,
http://www.opticsplanet.com/meade-etx90ec.html, Meade ETX 90, and
http://www.opticsplanet.com/meade-ts-etx-105-at.html, Meade ETX 105.
The Meade scopes both come on a more solid fork mount. The base can be used with or without the tripod legs that come with. The goto computer also has a 40,000 object database, compared to 4,000 in the Celestron.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

I am looking to buy a telescope for astronomical viewing. A go to system is a must. What would be your recommendations as to the best bang for the buck. We have plenty of room away from the lights in Arizona.

Thanks
