Just wanted to post I had the same experience, BSA Deerhunter spotting scope 20-60x60mm, bought brand new from Sportsman's Guide, so not ebay, and now it's sticky as can be, unusable like that, black coating comes off on hands, have to scrub off.
Beware, haven't contacted BSA but pretty sure they wouldn't do anything now as I've had it several years. Hopefully they've adjusted\changed their process, too late for some us though.

i bought a Gamo shadow NRA limited Ed air rifle a few yrs back came with a Gamo scope apparantly [link=http://www.opticsplanet.com/bsa-brand.html]BSA[/link] as the thing turned in to a sticky mess for me also. I cleaned it up with Denatured alcohol and thought it was good to go again. a yr later it was all sticky again. thats where I stand now.NO more rubber [link=http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-brand.html]scopes[/link]. must be a new China rubber coating

That had to hurt. I am so sorry to hear that. If the scope was new, I should think BSA should take care of it under warranty. if not, might still be worth a call. Contact BSA at 954-581-2144 or visit their website at http://www.bsaoptics.com/

Well Fellas
I tried the Rubbing Acohol but that didn't make things any better so I went to my shop and soaked a rag in mineral Spirits and started rubbing,It took me over a hour to get this sticky rubber/paint substance off and down to it's original Flat Black finish which still looked pretty good.
As I was literally scrubbing (elbow Grease) this stuff off, being careful not to get near the lenses. The Body came apart in my hands, right in the center of the Scope at the BSA Ring.
I bought this Spotting Scope new or so It was advertised as new on Ebay 3 or 4 yrs ago, after cleaning it up and after it came Apart I found out why this Crap was on it, the threads were stripped out and it had hairline cracks[img][/img] on both top and bottom pieces. It looked to have Blue Loctite in what was left of it's threads and then repainted with some kind of rubber based paint to cover up the tiny Cracks!!!
I used Loctite Red along with 2 drops of loctite SuperGlue(It has broke the Guinness World Record for eaviest vehicle lifted Ever with a glue by over 1 Ton") (http://www.reliableplant.com/article.as ... d+for+lift
to put it back together.
I'll now spray paint it with a clear coat of PolyUrethane Clear to finish it off and if it breaks later on I'll be back here at OpticPlanet to buy a much better one!
I want to thank Everyone for their replies and imput, every little bit helps even a bit of Constructive Criticism is always wecome!!
So thank You All!! :D

Hi

You're right - not worth the hassle and expense to ship it back for repair. I'd say go for it as long as you are super careful not to gum up the optics or focusing mechanisms. Given the price of the scope, not much to lose, anyway. Let us know how it turns out.

Hi! Jne_K

No I never used it while around anything that would remove it's Painted/Rubber Coated Finish. I got a Email back from BSA and they gave no advice just said they would fix or replace it at their owndiscretion for a price - Well It's not worth really sending in when I can replace it for $59 or upgrade for about $69.
It would cost me Half that in to & fro Shipping charges!!!
I think I'll try the rubbing Acohol first and if I do take some of the fininh off I'll just try and use Krylon Fusion for Plastic, it will also put a Plastic coating on Wood, Metal, Wicker, Wrought Iron, Plastic, Hard Vinyl, Glass, Plaster, Ceramic, Paper, Paper Mache.
Should work ?
Any Thoughts!

Ouch. You might try some rubbing alcohol to dry it out, but that's a first for me. Question: did you use it when you were using mosquito repellent? DEET acts like a finish remover. Anyway, best of luck.

I tried Dish Washing soap on a warm rag and it made it even sticker!!!
Guess I'll try useing Mineral Spirits to try and smooth the mess out then seal it with a spray on PolyUrathane??? :?:

Thank You Guys!

No offense, but that's why BSA stands for "Barely Sufficient Apparatus".

Hi

Sorry, that does happen whith inexpensive spotting scopes, which use cheap finishes which deteriorate with age or heat. All you can try to do is wash it with dishwashing soap.

Help!Spotting Scope geting hands really Black!

Post by tenacrewoods on Wed Jul 08, 2009 10:46 pm

Bought a BSA spotting Scope Deer Hunter DH15-45x50 a few years back. I keep it on top of a China Cabinet on it's tripod (lens Caps On) and took it down last night for the first time in about 1-1/2yrs.
I started wipping the dust off and it felt a bit sticky so I got a warm lightly soaped rag to clean it up and a Lot of Black Stuff started coming off on my hands and the rage, now it's really sticky and I can't touch it without getting my hands covered in this Black Stuff? What is this Black Sticky Substance and what do I do with it Now?
I really liked this Scope but Now I feel it is Ruined.
Is there any thing I can use to clean This up or seal it maybe?

Please Help! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
