I am a big, big swarovski fan, but also a Kowa fan. In my tests, the 883 scored the best, overall, but I think you would be happy with either scope

You might look at the article entitled "Scope Quest 2008" from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It has some interesting comments on those two scopes....

Thanks for the input. I believe that I'll end up getting either the Swaro STS80 HD or the Kowa 883. Might as well go for the best.

Correct. HD, ED, fluorite, APO and so on will improve image quality, visually, at magnifications mostly above 40x (assuning all else is equal, as with the Kowa 881 vs 883), but will improve pic quality at any magnification. If you want the best visually and photgraphically, the Kowa 883 is the better choice, but, yes, the Kowa 880 series is really superb in any configuration.

People who do a lot of digiscoping and participate in optics forums for the most part agree that it is much more preferable to have HD glass. If you are serious about picture quality, then go with the best you can easily afford. Otherwise, you will be wishing you had....

Kowa/Swaro HD vs non HD glass

Post by AzBob on Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:32 am

I've been looking for a spotting scope for a while now. I have a pair of Swaro binos and love the clarity. I was leaning towards a Swaro scope (once I saved up the $$$) but a week ago I was shooting Hi power silhouette and a guy had a Kowa tsn-881. At 500M it was very clear. My main use would be rifle silhouette and hunting but I beleive I would also like ot get into Digiscoping. Just how much difference does the HD glass make for pictures? We have a Nikon D80 camera so I think we have a decent digital camera. Any guidence is appreciated!
