Hi,
I am just a few months shy of my next eye exam, but needed some RX
sunglasses. So, I took an old pair of Wayfarers into the local Eyemasters and had them put in a set of lenses; I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money when my prescription is getting ready to be updated. I plan to replace the entire set (lenses and frames) once I have a new script.
Here's the question: I started out with a black/gray tint. I noticed that in certain kinds of light (incandescent, sun at certain times) that the lenses appeared reddish and cast a red shadow on my face. I went back to the optician and had the tint changed to green (their approximation of
Ray Ban green) and noted the same effect. The lenses look green under flourescent light, but sometimes appear reddish (the same "reddish" as with the gray/black lenses) under warmer light sources. My last few pairs of lenses have been black/gray polarized - with and without mirror coating - and I have never noticed this effect before. My current lenses are not as dark as those by the way.
So - is this just a normal phenomenon that I've never noticed? Or does it have to do with way the lenses are tinted? I really like the look of Wayfarers with "RB green" and am considering that for my new pair. Is this something I will have to live with if I choose those? Or is it an effect of the lenses not being polarized?
Second question: my last "good" pair of shades were Oakley's with Oakley-made rx lenses. They certainly seem to be higher quality than the "made in the local lab" quality. When you make up
Ray Ban rx lenses, who makes the lenses? Are they made by
Ray Ban - and would they be of a similar quality to my Oakley's - or at least better than the ones my local optician might supply?
Thanks so much
Ken
