There's a screw that's between two of the legs that allows me to raise and lower the head. The screw I was referring to is on the other side of the handle. Loosening this screw seems to allow me to rotate the head, but just within a 90 degree arc. Is that right?

Hi

If you mean the screw on the other side of the head from the handle, that is the windage (horizontal motion) friction adjustment. Tightne or loosen as needed. The screw directly above the handle allows you to use the tripod to take pics under the photo by flipping the base on its side. Not something you need for most photography and never with a spotting scope. Hope this helps. Good tripod.

I just got the Nikon 848 tripod for a Christmas present. No manual though. All looks intuitive, but there's one screw on the right side of the head that seems to serve no purpose. Any ideas?
