My Granddaughter wants a microscope. She is going to be a vet, but is currently only in her 3rd year of college so she isn’t in the “Vet School” yet (MSU) While years from how , when she really is a Vet, she will be able to buy something much better then I can afford. I asked her what she needed and she said she would like a
binocular compound microscope. She suggested a
Nikon or
Zeiss. I suggested that she might think SS pays a lot more then it really does. I’m more looking for something in the $500 range.
So far, about the only way I have been comparing them is by weight. My thinking is the heavier
scopes most likely will be better made so I should choose a 20lbs scope over a 10lbs scope.
I see a lot of
optics availed separately. I was wondering if I got her one of the $500 class
scopes and she finds she is most using the 4X object lens with the 10X eye piece, could I later buy her a
Nikon (or
Zeiss ) 4x object lens and
Nikon eye piece so she has a better quality image. Basically, I could buy her the complete scope this year, and then when I get my tax refund next year buy her better
optics. It’s been a long time since I was in college, but it seems to me I used one “power” about 90% of the time so there was no reason to buy all 4 high quality lenses.
When comparing camera lens, I can see the difference in picture quality, but I really don’t know how much the difference is in
microscopes.
